Music Fans at a Concert

Tickets for Beyoncé's long-awaited Cowboy Carter tour have gone on sale in the UK, drawing a surge of eager fans vying to secure their spots, as expected. However, this high demand has also attracted the attention of scammers seeking to exploit concertgoers in their rush to purchase tickets. “Beyoncé’s tour could result in another ‘Oasis storm’ — huge fan demand, limited tickets, a single primary seller, and a stressful buying process. This makes it easier for scammers to take advantage of fans, which often drives them to social media platforms. I’d like to say ticket criminals are dull and stupid, but they’re not – actually, they’re getting more sophisticated,” says Tony Neate, chief executive of Get Safe Online.

The excitement surrounding major concerts, including Beyoncé’s highly anticipated tour, Oasis’s long-awaited reunion, and Black Sabbath’s farewell shows, has driven a surge in demand for live experiences—amplified by the desire to reconnect after the pandemic. This heightened interest has created fertile ground for scammers, with a Lloyd’s Bank report revealing that victims buying Oasis tickets lost an average of £346 each, and over 90% of these scams originated on social media. Data from Action Fraud also showed £6.7 million lost to ticket fraud across the UK in the same year. Fraudsters exploit social engineering tactics like scarcity, creating a false sense of urgency by suggesting tickets are in short supply, prompting rushed decisions. Combined with optimism bias—the belief that “it won’t happen to me”—this environment makes fans particularly vulnerable to scams. Eager to secure tickets for high-demand events, many overlook red flags and become susceptible to fraudulent schemes. To stay vigilant, buyers should always purchase tickets through regulated platforms or official vendor websites, which offer greater protection and verification processes. It is also important to be cautious of deals on social media, avoid payments via bank transfers, and verify sellers before committing to a purchase.
