A survey by Deloitte reveals that two-thirds of employees who work remotely at least part-time would likely quit if forced to return to the office five days a week. "It’s clear that flexibility in workplace arrangements is a driving force in employee engagement," says Neda Shemluck, the US Financial Services Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leader at Deloitte. "It’s incumbent on employers to create policies that meet business needs while still offering employees the autonomy and flexibility they seek." As workers prioritise work-life balance, employers must adapt or risk losing top talent.

This shift towards remote work presents challenges for cyber security, particularly in the financial services sector, where safeguarding sensitive information is paramount. In the office, strict security measures can protect against data breaches, but these safeguards are less effective when employees are working from home or shared public spaces. Financial institutions must now rethink their cyber security strategies to accommodate the rise in remote working. One approach gaining traction is the use of "nudges"—small behavioural prompts that encourage employees to adopt safer practices, such as locking devices or using secure networks. These nudges help maintain robust security standards even when employees are working in less secure environments. As the financial services sector evolves, it is vital for firms to ensure sensitive data is protected without compromising employees' desire for autonomy and work-life balance.
